1679 - August 7 - René de La Salle launches his 46 ton trading vessel 'Le Griffon,' the First ship to sail the upper Great Lakes; on August 27, 1679 La Salle will leave on the Griffon for Michilimackinac and Green Bay with trade goods, and La Salle returned east.
